The Danish government, which has long launched an initiative to ban elephants from performing in the country's circuses, has allocated DKK 11 million to buy back the last four trained animals and put them in comfortable conditions in the national park, according to Danish newspaper JydskeVeskusten.
A kind of "nursing home" will be created in Knuteborg Park. The old elephants, who have played in arenas all their lives, will calmly live out their days without applause, but without stress. They will be given an area of 15 square kilometers, says the chief zoologist of the park.
Arena Circus will receive DKK 8.5 million for its three elephants, and Trapez Circus for its elephant 3.7 million.
